Som MittalThe Mittal 'MagiQ'. For Som Mittal (46), it is sort of a dream-come-true experience. The battle for the chief honcho's post for the recently merged Digital and Compaq's operations in India was a close affair because his rival, Abhishek Mukherjee, was a very strong contender. Mukherjee was Compaq's managing director till Mittal became the choice for the topslot. A product of IIM, Ahemedabad, it speaks immensely about the CEO's calibre and standing among the IT global majors that made Compaq prefer him. The grapevine has it that Mittal's strong point was his ability to turn around Digital India's fortunes in the shortest possible time. He began his career in finance, working mostly in the automotive sector at Nippon Denso, Escorts and L&T in various management positions. In 1994, he moved to Digital after a stint at Wipro. As the managing director of fully owned Compaq and 51 percent-owned Digital India, it is quite a new experience for Mittal. But Compaq has no qualms in entrusting two of their prized possessions in one of the world's biggest emerging markets. Gardening, his most cherished hobby, teaches about patience in nurturing. His other passion, long walks, will be handy as in his new capacity he has more ground to cover.
