Symmetric Server
"Staying ahead in business
means you need every advantage you can get to increase your computing power and conserve
your scarce IT resources," says Balu Doraisamy, the new managing
director for Compaq Computer India Pvt Ltd. The priority for him is to redefine the server
marketplace with the new Compaq ProLiant 8000 and 8500 servers. Infotech systems are being
put under constant pressure, says Doraiswamy, by new applications and demands on
performance. "But the new Profusion 8-Way Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP)
architecture, on which these new servers are based, will power the customer's most
demanding applications like electronic commerce, decision support, ERP, messaging and
collaboration." The catch-phrase: scalability and performance for a new generation of
business computing. Doraiswamy is not new to the IT market. He honed his skills at Digital
Equipment Corporation, USA, where he joined in 1983 as senior engineer, Corporate Software
Engineering and then worked as Technology Consultant, Advanced System Development. After
the Compaq-Digital merger, he became director, Global Accounts, Asia-Pacific Division of

infrastructure from scratch. Siemens Computer Systems saw its turnover quadruple from Rs
30 crore to Rs 120 crore in just one and half years. If business development is his
keynote, Puri's 15-year experience with MNCs also makes him an authority on work culture.
Says he: "The Germans and Japanese are conservative and demanding. The Japanese are
keen on protocol and ceremony. Americans are more flexible, and are the best in
marketing."
