Entering
the growing market of intelligent optical networking is Sanjay Nayak.
As chief executive officer of Tejas Networks, promoted by Gururaj
Deshpande of the Sycamore fame, Nayak has the mandate to spearhead the
development of optical networking products for the global market and to
provide services for the emerging telecom market in the Asian
subcontinent. He says, "Having built successful Indian R&D
operations for global product companies, I was convinced about the ability
to build a global product company with its base in India. Being part of
large multi-national companies, it is difficult to realise the full
potential of the Indian operations and unlock the value that can be
created from India. In Tejas, we plan to exploit this exciting market
opportunity as well as the talent base in India to make a global product
company. We want to make Tejas a highly successful product and solution
company for the fast growing global optical networking market." Prior
to starting Tejas, Nayak was the managing director of Synopsys India, a
100 per cent subsidiary of Synopsys Inc., USA. Earlier to this, he started
the India operations for Viewlogic Systems Inc., USA a leader in
simulation technology. He has also held senior management positions in
Gateway Design Automation and Cadence Design Systems. He holds a MS Degree
(Electrical and Computer Engineering) from North Carolina State
University, Raleigh, USA and BE (Electronics and Communication
Engineering) from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra.
"Three
years ago, when Cabletron was merged with the network division of Digital,
it was a small company with five or six people. In the last three years,
the team has grown to 20. But more significant has been the growth in
sales. A company with a turnover of Rs 25 crore is now a Rs 250-crore
company. I think it happened because of the sheer hard work and dedication
of my team," says Uday Birje, country manager, Enterasys
Networks in India and SAARC. He has successfully lead the company in the
last three years, during when he moved to Cabletron Systems from Digital.
Early 2000, Cabletron Systems was transformed into four independent
operating entities, namely Enterasys Networks, Riverstone Networks,
Aprisma Management Technologies and GNTS (Global Network Technology
Services). Subsequent to this, Enterasys Networks was launched in India a
year ago. An engineering graduate in Electrical and Electronics from BMS
College, Bangalore, Birje started his career with HCL and later moved to
Digital where he set up the network products business for the company.
