Briefings

MUSIC
Remix No. 1
Sanjay Raina
Magnasound, Rs 50

Another album with old tunes redone. Nothing new here, though the original songs possess a timeless grace. The collection includes popular numbers like Om shanti om, Jahan teri yeh nazar hai and Hawa hawa. Put simply, it's just about okay.

Indian Classical on Swarmandal
Srikant Thackeray
Magnasound, Rs 60

For the first time, the swarmandal is presented as a solo instrument. It brings together four ragas -- Yaman, Patdeep, Madhuwanti and a dhun in Bhairavi. Soulful and soothing to the ears.

Betabi
Venus, Rs 32

After Maachis, one expected better music from Vishal Bhardwaj. But Betabi doesn't quite match up. Suresh Wadekar's Tum mere ho is pleasant. The rest is good, but not really brilliant.

ART
Exhibition of Art
Surya Gallery, Hyderabad
August 15 to September 10

Celebrating its fourth anniversary, Surya Gallery presents an array of artists, the famous and those who are not. On show are works by Amitava Das, Ashok Mullick and others. An impressive display.

Hidden Agenda
Lynda Benglis
Gallery Chemould, Mumbai
August 25 to September 5

Benglis' works have been shown, and appreciated, in galleries across the world. Hidden Agenda introduces her to India. The exhibition has works in mixed media -- paints, photographs and relief in gold leaf. Certainly worth your time.

FASHION
Ensemble
Mehrauli and Santushti Complex
New Delhi

First in Mumbai and now in Delhi, Ensemble proudly sports the label of "India's first high-fashion store". Designs on display are by Tarun Tahiliani, Arjun Khanna and others. A chance to pick up some exclusive stuff. For the well-lined wallet!

Krishna Mehta
Mehrauli,
New Delhi

Also opening this week is designer Krishna Mehta's store. Those who drop by will be spending their time and money well. Mehta's trademark: clean cuts, trendy designs: A good week for fashion freaks, but this one could be overshadowed by its exalted neighbour, Ensemble.

ODD ENDS
