Cover Story
IMAGES: DISASTERS
Year of Chaos

Charred bodies. Mangled steel. Stricken families. Images disturbingly becoming a part of our daily life. There were more fires, accidents, building collapses, caste and communal killings and train wrecks during the year than ever before. The reactions were routine: inquiry committees, official suspensions and political expressions of grief. Beyond that, no one cared -- except the relatives of those who perished.

."It's not fate but the
system that is
responsible, and
they must pay."

--Harish Dang,
who lost his wife and son
in the Uphar cinema fire in Delhi
