POST-POLL STRATEGIES
Eyeing the Centre

To stake a decisive claim to power, the major party blocks--the BJP, Congress and the United Front--must cross the half-way mark of 272 seats in the 12th Lok Sabha. If pre-poll surveys are any indication, this seems unlikely. Given this scenario, here's a look at existing-tie-ups and emerging alliances.

LEFT PARTIES                        54

Left Parties
Expected to be the biggest block after the BJP and the Congress. In a hung House scenario, in order to keep the BJP out, the Left will back the Congress, with the condition that its support is issue-based.

Akali Dal
Shares power with the BJP in Punjab. Old rivalries will prevent it from supporting any Congress-led regime.

DMK                                           17
If UF fails, may bargain with BJP

DMK
Would prefer not making any deals with the Congress, but Moopanar may win over M. Karunanidhi. Bargaining with the BJP is not ruled out, provided the saffron party dumps Jayalalitha.

SHIV SENA                              15
Will continue to support BJP

Shiv Sena
The four-year-old alliance with the BJP in Maharashtra is likely to endure..

TELUGU DESAM PARTY           17

Telugu Desam Party
The BJP looks at N. Chandrababu Naidu's party as a potential ally. If its leaders dump Lakshmi Parvati, and the BJP is within striking distance, TDP may support Vajapayee as prime minister

BIJU JANTA DAL                     0
Committed to back BJP

Biju Janata Dal
Naveen Patnaik's new party is expected to continue backing the BJP.

RASHTRIYA JD                          16

Rashtriya JD
Laloo Prasad Yadav's party is committed to support the Congress which has a tacit understanding with Mulayam. However, if Mulayam is made deputy prime minister, Laloo will also settle for nothing less.

LOK SHAKTI                            0

Nobody is an enemy barring Kalyan Sing. Will support any party if its main demand--to make Mayawati Uttar Pradesh chief minister--is met.

TRINAMOOL CONGRESS        0

Trinamool Congress
Mamata Banerjee has one enemy--CPI(M). Considers all those opposed to the CPI(M) her friends..
