MUSIC

Fulfilment: Shubhendra Rao
Nishad Records

This CD is a fitting celebration of India's 50 years of Independence. Shubhendra Rao, who has the distinction of being trained by Pandit Ravi Shankar for 22 years, presents the morning raga Lalit and evening raga Maru Bihag, with great verve and wizardry. Ably accompanied by Udai Mazumdar on the tabla, Rao's inimitable style exemplifies the renowned Maihar-Senia gharana.

Banaa
Ninaad, Rs 75 each

Another rare treat from the Ninaad label, this is a two-volume collection of traditional wedding songs sung by the Manganiyars and Langas from remote villages of Jaisalmer and Barmer. The album, conceived and directed by Komal Kothari, has haunting, powerful tunes which make it a unique listening experience.

Qahar
Zee Music, Rs 35

Anand-Milind fail to live up to the expectations of the listeners who had been enthralled by Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Except for Rab ke samne, which is an excellent duet by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, the other songs leave much to be desired. Mohammed Aziz seems to have made a comeback with the melodious bhajan -- Om Krishna.

The theme of introspection binds the works of these 44 artists. From Jehangir Sabavala's reflective impressions of himself in Mirror Image, to a portrayal of the silent inner currents, as in Rekha Rao's Self Portrait. But for most, it is a representation of their inner and outer worlds.
