Notes on the Net Yet another gesture for the Indian cricket team. But this one from Magnasound
is, you know, different. Log in to the Net at www.music-from-india.com, add a line to an
already-partly-written World Cup song, and don't be surprised if your line is incorporated
in the final number to be sung by Remo Fernandes, Daler Mehndi
and Sonu Nigam, with Style Bhai adding a bit of rap. The entries sent in
so far are, ahem, interesting. Like this one from a certain Gitanjali Maniktala. "Jo
jeeta wahi Sikandar, World Cup lao kahlao Jitendar," she writes. Daler might still
have a blast with that one. But Remo? We've got to hear this one.
Bio
Rhythm
It's a long way from Anantapur to Philadelphia.
But Madhurima Benakareddy, 15, made the trip, and look
where it's got her. The teen whiz from Andhra has bagged the Grand Award in Biochemistry
at the recent Intel International Science & Engineering Fair. She explains her
presentation: "My aim is to develop a bio-pesticide for cotton without killing the
preying insects as they have as much right to life as we humans have on the planet."
Kiddo's also won a trip to Hanover for the World Wide Young Researchers for Environment
Contest. So when we say she's going places, take that literally.
Raindrops are falling on her Head
Who's that girl? Does Amitabh Bachchan's pretty co-star in
Sooryavansham have a name? Sure she does. She's called Soundarya, and
though Sooryavansham is her Bollywood debut, in the woods further south she's already a
force to reckon with. At 22, she's 65-films-old in the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada industry.
But skin-happy Hindi producers take note. "She never does roles which require
exposing and the same will be for Hindi films," warns her brother Amarnath, who also
manages her career. As for this water-soaked snap of her. Aw, come on! What's an
occasional rain dance?
Acting Writer
 After
150 films and about 50 TV serials, a man's got to do something different. So actor Tom
Alter wrote a book. It's called The Best in the World:
India's Ten Greatest World Cup Matches (Penguin; co-author -- journalist
Ayaz Memon). Surprised? Don't be. Alter's not just any Tom, Dick or Harry. He plays with a
Bollywood cricket team, does a regular newspaper column and did one of the earliest
recorded TV interviews of Sachin Tendulkar when the lad was just 15. Now the book.
"We've tried to make it personal, nostalgic and insightful," says the
48-year-old. Well, he's written on the game for 15 years now. It helps.
