In a
close contest the Congress benefitted from the BJP's inability to campaign aggressively.
More hands changed hands than aggregate figures indicate. The Congress maintained its
traditional bases but Arjun Singh and Madhavrao Scindia suffered a jolt in their old
bastions. |

The
absolute disenchantment with the outgoing BJP government has reflected in all regions of
the state. Even in the Rajput belt, Shekhawat's turf, the BJP was worsted. In the 1998 Lok
Sabha polls, the Congress had gained uniformly across the state. This time, despite
rebels, it held on to its vote. |
