The Congress had a famous victory. The BJP kept its core intact but frittered away all its general election gains.

The election results represent an unqualified triumph for the Congress. Despite the setback in Mizoram it won over 50 per cent of the total votes.

MADHYA PRADESH (Region-wise performance)

Seats Cong BJP BSP Others In a close contest the Congress benefitted from the BJP's inability to campaign aggressively. More hands changed hands than aggregate figures indicate. The Congress maintained its traditional bases but Arjun Singh and Madhavrao Scindia suffered a jolt in their old bastions.

RAJASTHAN (Region-wise performance)

Seats Cong BJP BSP Others The absolute disenchantment with the outgoing BJP government has reflected in all regions of the state. Even in the Rajput belt, Shekhawat's turf, the BJP was worsted. In the 1998 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had gained uniformly across the state. This time, despite rebels, it held on to its vote.
