OUT REACH
Mother Figure
A
chance meeting between choreographer Sudha Seetharaman and a family of Russian musicians
on the New York subway led to the formation of Trilok Fusion last year. Something has
happened since. The company recently closed its first work Maa -- The Creator, an
experimental fusion, at the Clark Studio Theatre in New York's Lincoln Centre. It's a mix
of dance and Sanskrit shlokas to the music of the flute, the tabla, the bassoon, the
didgeridoo and bouzouki. It's as exotic as her crew, drawn from every continent except
South America. The tiny company plans to take the three dancers, six musicians and two
visual artists to some Indian cities. "We hope to spread the message of
multi-culturalism," says Seetharaman. It will be interesting to see how audiences in
India take to Maa, which is woven around the mother figure as boss: cultural, political
and economic.-- Lavina Melwani |
