The Call of the East

Natural beauty and history combine to make the region a tourist paradise.

ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS

A beach in the AndamanThe archipelago of 321 emerald islands in the Bay of Bengal is marked by pristine beaches and verdant rain forests.

The capital, Port Blair, is a fascinating racial and cultural mix. Some of the islands in the Andamans are home to the original tribal inhabitants—the Andamanese, the Onges, the Jaravas and the Sentinalese. The tribals in Nicobar are predominantly Shompens and the Nicobarese. The tropical rain forests and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean support a wide range of flora and fauna. Places of interest in Port Blair include the famed Cellular Jail and the Marine Museum.

On the outskirts of the capital city, is Corbyn’s Cove, a palm-fringed beach ideal for water sports. Other spots worth a visit are the Chatham Saw Mill; the Zoological Gardens, Mount Harriet, Sippighat Farm, Dilthaman Tank, Chidiya Tapu, Wandoor Beach, Viper Island, Ross Island and Car Nicobar.

The isles are well connected by air and sea to the Indian mainland. And island taxis, ferries and boats facilitate travel between islands. The traveller has a range of hotels to choose from. However, foreign nationals have to obtain a permit from the government authorities to visit some of the places.
