From Historical monuments to traditional handicrafts, the state
offers tourists a fascinating mix. Its capital city, Patna was once a regional capital of
the British, today it is the hub of commercial and tourism activity in the state.
Of special interest to visitors are the centres of Buddhism in the state. Bodhgaya, the
place where Buddha attained enlightenment, is a major pilgrimage centre for domestic as
well as international tourists. The place is renowned for its magnificent Vishnu and the
Mahabodhi temples, the Shaivite monastery and the Buddha Archaeological Museum. Other
places associated with Buddha are Vaishali, Gaya, Hazaribagh and Palamu. Rajgir, in
Nalanda, is a religious centre for both Buddhists and Jains. Other tourist spots in and
around Rajgir are the hot water spring, Shanti Stupa, Maniar Math, Venu Van Vihar and
Swarn Bhandar Cyclopean Wall. Sasaram, 152 km from Patna, is famous for the tomb of Sher
Shah Suri, while the Betla National Park has a rich plant and animal life. Bihar is also
renowned for Madhubani paintings, a folk art from the northern part of the state.
