The
Call of the East TRIPURA
The Former princely state, is a land of mystery and ancient
traditions. Renowned for the classic quality of its handloom fabrics and handicrafts, it
is situated at about 1,280 metres above mean sea level. With the abolition of Restricted
Area Permit system in 1995, there has seen a substantial rise in tourist traffic to the
state, which is well connected by air, rail and road to Guwahati in Assam and Calcutta in
West Bengal.
Some of the popular destinations in the state are
the Ujjayanta Palace in the capital city, Agartala; the 16th century Tripurasundari
temple, the Bhuvaneshwari temple at Udaipur and the Jampui hills, which abound in scenic
beauty. The verdant forests, excellent climactic conditions, its sunrise and sunset points
and the annual Orange Festival are big attractions. Other places of interest include
Sepahijala, Unakoti, lake palace Neermahal, Pilak, Kamalasagar, Deotamura and Dumboor
lake. Special packages and conducted tours have been devised by the state tourism
department to cater to travellers.
