The Call of the East

DARJEELING

Mount Kunchenjanga as seen from DarjeelingKnown as the Queen of Hills, it is a popular resort in West Bengal. Situated at a height of 2,134 metres, the region abounds in natural beauty. In recent times, the region has developed into a popular destination for eco-tourism and adventure sports such as white water rafting and trekking.

The rugged Teesta and the turbulent Rangeet, with their series of unpredictable rapids, set the adrenaline pumping of even veteran white water rafters. The most popular trek is the Singalila trek, which terminates at Phalut at an altitude of over 11,000 feet. Along the route the DGHC has constructed 11 huts. The main attraction at Mirik, 49 km from Darjeeling, is the Sumendu lake, the banks of which are connected by an arching footbridge. Kalimpong, at an altitude of 1,250 metres enjoys a moderate climate, and is an excellent spot for a quiet holiday. And Kurseong, which offers a magnificent view of the southern plains,.is a quaint little town, situated 30 km from Darjeeling.

Darjeeling is well connected by air, road and rail. A toy train ferries visitors between Siliguri and Darjeeling town. The nearest airport is Bagdogra. To popularise the region as a tourist destination an annual tourism festival is held in November.
