Bhubaneswar, the
states capital is renowned for its numerous temples. The biggest of them is the 11th
century Lingaraja temple of lord Shiva. The Ashokan Rock Edict in Dhauli and the Vishwa
Shanti Stupa in the Dhaulagiri hills are fine examples of Buddhist architecture. Other
sites to see include the state Museum, the Rock-Cut caves in Khandigiri and Udayagiri,
Nandan Kanan zoo and Atri Hot Sulphur springs.
The Jagannath temple in Puri is a major
pilgrimage centre; the Sun temple in Konark is famous for its erotic sculptures; Cuttack,
Orissas oldest city, is a centre for handicrafts; and the
Ratnagiri-Lalitgiri-Udayagiri hills, the seat of Buddhist culture. Spread over 1,100 sq
km, Chilika lake is the countrys largest inland lake. Similpal National Park,
Chandipur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Rayagada, Bhawanipatna, Jeypore, Sambalpur and Rourkela
are other favourites with tourists.
Orissa is known for its festivals and fairs. Some
of the important ones are the Makar Mela, Maha Shivaratri, Sitalasasthi, the Ratha Yatra,
the Beach festival and the Konark festival.
