INDIA
State of the Nation

5050 years of existence as an independent nation has produced convictions, attitudes and fears which are real, tangible and, more important, identifiable. An exhaustive India Today-ORG-Marg Independence poll sought to track and interpret some of these.

THE concentrated exposure to globalisation hasn't swept India off its feet. There is a certain wariness about the impact of western culture on traditional values. Ironically, this fear has served to bolster traditional attitudes including attitudes to sex and marriage. The nation may be an article of faith, but it has not been allowed to intrude into the family. Urban Indians and the more educated are a little more open-minded, but it is a matter of degree.
