It's
their War Too
Dharamshala, Himachal
Pradesh
For the Helpline Club of Yol, the most auspicious place to
begin its collection for Kargil was the local Chamundi Devi temple. Apart from the
pilgrims, the large retinue of temple beggars responded enthusiastically, emptying their
bowls of change into the flag. "Can't we do even this much for our soldiers?"
asked the partially mute Sitaram, a beggar for 12 years who donated his day's earnings.
"It is time for us to do our bit," added beggar Amar Singh. The total collection
yielded Rs 27,000. Now the club plans to send rakhis from local women to soldiers on the
front on Raksha Bandhan.
