In death, Dinesh Vaghela, a sepoy in the 12 Mahar Regiment, proved a great leveller. Breaking caste barriers, some 20,000 people attended the funeral of a Kargil martyr who brought special glory to his "untouchable" Bhangi caste. The Vaghela hutment has become a new pilgrimage point as Dinesh is likened to Shivaji. "He has guaranteed a place for the entire family in heaven," says father Mohanlal with both sadness and pride. |
