Naval Mission

Kabaddi, the game played in dusty village grounds across India, has now found a superior sponsor in the UK: the Royal Navy, which has teamed up with Sony Entertainment Television. Cups are being given out and tournaments telecast on prime-time slots. And in the land of the gentleman's game, each week these rustic encounters are drawing crowds of over 5,000 in locations like Bedford, Huddersfield, Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Around 15 teams turn up for the weekly contests, which will continue until August. The champions so far are the tough contenders from Glasgow, Birmingham and Slough. "They are feared," says a kabaddi enthusiast. Is this the Royal Navy's pr exercise with British Asians? No one's telling. But the navy's recruitment tents, up at every kabaddi tournament, are filled with enticing pamphlets. Perhaps that's telling enough.
