Reshmi Chakraborty couldn't stop laughing the day her higher secondary school results were announced last week. She was hysterical. Students like Reshmi -- almost 350 of them a day -- have been dialling the telephone helpline (4764011) set up this year by the Calcutta NGO, Society for Nature, Education and Health (SNEH), to deal with the problem of post-results depression. Amal Roy, whose son was missing for several hours the day his results were announced, asks: "Why aren't there state-manned counselling centres or grievance cells even though suicides happen ever year?" Why indeed.
