Table Trouble Why waste your rooftop rain water as mere run-off?" says the ad. Strange. What else do you do? Collect it, advises the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The DJB, which comes under the Delhi Government, has advertised to draw the general public into its efforts to recharge the capital's receding ground-water levels. "The idea is to advise citizens on how to use abandoned dug wells within their premises, recharge pits and other techniques to collect water that would normally go waste," says S.K. Mohiddin, a scientist with the Central Ground Water Authority that is advising the board on the project. In simple terms, among other things, the percolation of this water into the soil would raise the ground-water level in the vicinity. "Water is too precious to be wasted," says the DJB ad. About time the city realised that. --Anna M M Vetticad |
