New Fizz in Town

He goes by the unlikely name of Pepsi. Sabyasachi "Pepsi" Mukherjee. Because "I'm shaped like the bottle," says the gangly couturier-to-watch-out-for from Calcutta. And because at a school fest five years ago, he played Madonna, in a red, white and blue dress. The MNC handle helps. At least for instant recall of "that new kid (he's 23) who swept the NIFT national finals in Delhi last month". And who's back to the drawing board for a Hong Kong fashion show later this year. His "Khaasgaar Bazar" line, modelled on the outfits of nomadic Central Asians, won him NIFT's regional and national best design collection awards. His embroidered Uzbeki chapan robe with a Tibeteika cap and cummerbund bagged the Ritu Kumar Award for Excellence in Fashion Design. Says designer Pali Sachdeva: "He has that artistic bent of mind. His clothes have a very strong presence." Enough to go to any rookie's head. Not him. "If anyone buys the outfit, they'll use it as a wall hanging," he says of his prize-winning robe. What's it going to be for Hong Kong? "India, of course," he asserts. "My designs are like hot, spicy Indian curry. They have everything, and are also tasty." Curries. Colas. What's with him?
