Let's Talk About Akhtar

Aamir Khan won't eat near Javed Akhtar. Because, Khan reveals, Bollywood's National Award- winning scriptwriter-lyricist makes him laugh too much. Now some of that wit has been captured in Nasreen Munni Kabir's Talking Films: Conversations on Hindi Cinema with Javed Akhtar. The book, the first in a series published by Oxford University Press, was released by Khan on July 23 in Mumbai. "There are so many great qualities in Javedsaab that I wish I had," says Khan, "his sense of humour, his smile, and his clarity of thought."

Much of that comes through in the book -- a 140-page interview, conducted in eight, two-hour meetings over nine months -- that has Akhtar turning his gaze on Hindi cinema, scriptwriting and Bollywood. There are also lesser known personal details about his childhood (instead of the Azaan, his father read the Communist Manifesto into his ear when he was born) and his growth as a poet. Kabir -- a London-based independent TV producer-director who largely works with Channel Four -- gently steers the conversation.

At the launch, wife Shabana Azmi read out excerpts, reminded "Jadoo" -- writer of 31 films and innumerable songs -- to fix his hair and smiled proudly. If that was a bit ga-ga, it was par for the course: with Akhtar, both success and sentiment are usually over the top.
