Oh Calcutta
Looks like these guys have a taste for the
taboo. After making news three years ago with the country's first ballet on gays, Sapphire
Creations Dance Workshop -- a talented contemporary dance troupe in Calcutta -- is
preparing another shocker. It's called Indian Erotica: a sex-down-the-ages kind
of thing, from Vedic Age couplings to millennial matings. Last week they previewed some of
their bolder moves: male and female dancers draped over each other, bodies flung at
bodies, postures from temple friezes. Says founder Sudarshan Chakraborty, the only member
who is a trained dancer: "Dance is about empowerment. You should be able to, and be
allowed to, use your body as you please." Chakraborty usually draws on his own
experience to train the group; but Indian Erotica will be partly choreographed by
France-based dancer Nana Gleason. Kama Sutra with a Parisian touch?
