Tribute To A Titan
Boardroom battles take a backseat sometimes. They did at theB K Birla greets Abhishek, Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan premiere of filmmaker Zafar Hai's The Brilliant Sun, an hour-long documentary on the life of the late Aditya Vikram Birla, at Mumbai's Sterling Cinema last week. While Ratan Tata inaugurated the proceedings, the audience included the Ruias, the Piramals, the Mahindras and representatives of every major industrialist family in the city. But despite their presence, the ones who dazzled more were Aditya's parents Sarla and B.K. Birla, personally greeting each of their guests; and his daughter Vasavadatta who opened the evening with the Saraswati Vandana, the traditional invocation to the goddess.

Coming a year after the release of the book Aditya Vikram Birla, A Biography, the film is a continuation of The Family's efforts to document the life of one of the country's most respected industrialists. With very little live footage available on A.V. Birla, Hai worked mostly with still photographs and voices from friends and family. "Being neighbours, I had the chance of knowing Aditya Birla to an extent," said Harsh Goenka after the show, "and yet the film brought out certain unknown facets of the person." Paean plus.
