Respondents were asked to indicate the parties or political alliances they could consider voting for. There was overwhelming enthusiasm for the two largest parties, pointing to both India's bipolar politics and the antipathy for small parties with a limited agenda. While the inclination for particular regional forces can be explained in terms of provincial articulation, the group that must be sorely disappointed is the left. For years Marxism was the staple of a large section of Indian youth. Now they seek a new manifesto.
