This was actually a trick question as the respondent could interpret it in a variety of ways -- in terms of geographical location, age, social class or any other identity. Again the BJP scored high among men, being the preferred choice of 48 per cent. Among women the Congress scored 34 per cent and actually outpolled the BJP by a percentage point. In urban areas the BJP had a 48 per cent rating, which slipped to 38 per cent in rural India. The results indicate that despite the strides it has made the BJP has an image problem: it is perceived as a party of patriarchal urbanites.
