Mix 'n' Match
The fashion season is in full swing now. Last week, youngster Monisha Bajaj did a mix of the traditional and the practical with her fall-winter show on the outskirts of Delhi. And Calcutta's best-known designer duo, sisters Mona Lamba and Pali Sachdeva, teamed up lehngas with bustiers and crop tops in their latest bridal collection, using a bit of kantha embroidery, some handpaint and sequins. Unveiled recently without gut-thudding music, snazzy lights, or even a runway, the Monapali "fashion show" had models mingling with the crowd, giving prospective customers a chance to take a closer look at the garments, even touch.

Bajaj, however, opted for a ramp. In her third solo effort, she presented an entire line of full-bodied lehngas in endless yards of silk and satin, rich brocade cholis with zipped-up saris, and trouser suits and salwar kameezes in crinkled fabric. Despite the occasional flaw -- a stray thread peeping out of a blouse, choli backs that fell awkwardly -- she came pretty close to doing what she set out to do: "something different for 23-30 year olds."
