The Music Review
SAVARIYA -- THREE BROTHERS AND A VIOLIN:

Magnasound; Rs 60).

This Indipop offering by the Parsuram brothers -- Vishwanath, Sriram and Narayan -- combines Indian strains drawn from classical music and bhajans with western orchestration. The highlight of the album: the vocals beautifully harmonised with Sriram's violin in the songs Mat jaa, the title song Savariya (Once Upon a Time), Udi chali and Barkha ritu. A pity that the mix of English and Hindi lyrics in three of the songs sounds so jarring.

LIVE INSIDE KHAJURAHO -- PANDIT JASRAJ, HARI PRASAD CHAURASIA:
Music Today; Rs 200).

Don't be misled by the title. This is not a live concert with an audience. The music was recorded within the sanctum sanctorum of the Kandariya Mahadeva temple in Khajuraho -- the novel concept works. The specially composed music for this double-cassette set rendered by vocalist Pandit Jasraj and flute maestro Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia manages to evoke the atmosphere of a concert inside a temple. Jasraj opens with a rare morning raga, while Chaurasia begins with Raga Malaya-marutam, a Carnatic raga. The CD versions have two additional compositions. A good buy.
