Art from the Heart
Cultural fêtes
are a dime a dozen these days. But this one was special. The Fifth Annual Dance Drama
Festival of Very Special Arts India, an NGO that promotes the arts among people with
disabilities, scored with the enthusiastic participation it attracted from schools across
Delhi. Over 300 children from 20 institutions -- kids with hearing and visual impairments,
cerebral palsy, autism -- presented songs and skits to a delighted though disappointingly
small audience. The LTG Auditorium was dotted with empty seats, but Daljeet Singh, a
participant from Balwant Rai Mehta School who did an onstage take on Daler Mehndi's Tunak
tunak tun, looked at the positive side: "The kids present here today have all sorts
of problems, and such programmes give them some much-needed encouragement." A larger
public turnout would help too.
