| SPECIAL SERIES Chandrababu
Naidu, 49 There's a new axiom out there: doggedness brings dividends. Ask N. Chandrababu Naidu -- he just wrote the book on it. The new messiah of political economy, Naidu has done right what so many got wrong: selling economic reform with the right political twist. He has endeared himself to business with diehard marketing of Andhra Pradesh. He has also shown political savvy by wooing rural women with a development spiel -- it won the Telugu Desam Lok Sabha seats and Naidu another chance at being kingmaker in Delhi. "Naidu has daring and determination," says K. Satish Reddy, managing director of Dr Reddy's Laboratories. Naidu also stands a fair chance, in an era of coalition politics, to be a future prime minister. "My goal is to make Andhra Pradesh a model state," says Naidu, who confesses admiration for Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew and Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad. Taking a cue from Mahathir, Naidu has commissioned a Vision 2020 document for Andhra Pradesh. There are some who argue he should be commissioning one for the country. -Amarnath K. Menon |
