SPECIAL SERIES

Raj  and Uddhav Thackeray, 31 & 39
Shiv Sena Leaders and Heirs

SENA SONS & CO
By definition, the Shiv Sena is a one-name outfit: it runs on the name of Bal Thackeray. After him, if the hard-driving party wants to pull in the crowds, it will have to be Raj and Uddhav, nephew and son, rabble-rouser and strategist, cartoonist and photographer. And rival and rival -- or so the public says, but Raj dismisses that bluntly by stating the choice of successor to Thackeray senior is now clear. "If at any time there is a question of who, it will be Uddhav who as the elder brother will be the obvious choice."

Perhaps, but the two can work as a team. While Uddhav uses logic to undermine an opponent, Raj uses wit to decimate. Uddhav prefers a macro view -- he talks in terms of "changing our mindset". Raj is a micro man. He prefers immediate issues and solutions. They are already the Sena's major envoys, even for sorting out the BJP-Sena power-sharing problem in Maharashtra. It's a state which they will try to define and redefine in future.
