| SPECIAL SERIES Pardeep
Kar, 41 Pradeep Kar would have been an ad-man if he weren't mad about computers. Phew. He introduced networking to India in the '80s when the term was understood to define a degree of human bonding. Today they call him the guru of networking and connectivity in India. Kar founded the company in 1989 with just Rs 20 lakh, mortgaging his father's house and with loans from friends. His current turnover: Rs 180 crore. This year, the World Economic Forum chose him as one of its 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow, along with Steve Case of America Online. "Five years from now, I see myself as a venture capitalist, helping build businesses in technology," he says. Kar is part way there. He has launched several firsts like planetasia.com (India's first and largest Net business solutions company) and itspace.com (India's first technology portal). Kar plays hard but manages to soak up jazz and rock despite a gruelling 14-hour workday. E-gurus need to, like, unwind too, y'know? -Stephen David |
