SPECIAL SERIES

Kalanidhi Maran, 34
Managing Director, Sun TV

Media Mogul
The media has labelled one other man, besides Zee TV boss Subhash Chandra,"India's Rupert Murdoch". Say hello to Kalanidhi Maran, son of Union Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran. He launched Sun TV in 1993 lured by advertisements. He ended up luring an entire audience. Tamil masses, bored by Doordarshan's dull, pedestrian fare, soaked up Sun with a vengeance.

Today Sun TV is driving the pack in southern India and is the single most influential satellite news and entertainment channel for the reach it offers and the innovations it introduces, setting the pace for other regional channels. Avowedly media-shy, the younger Maran is looking ahead. Realising the power of the Internet, he is now planning to take entertainment to cyberspace and invest heavily as an Internet service provider. Knowing him, you'll know of the service, more than who runs it.
