Rum and Rhythm
There are two ways of launching a Caribbean rum: you
could go formal or you could have some fun. Bacardi-Martini India did the sensible thing
-- had fun -- when it introduced Bacardi Reserva black rum to India last week. The party
in Mumbai -- to be followed by similar affairs in other cities including Calcutta and
Bangalore over two weeks -- featured floor-sizzle by Puerto Rican dance troupe Congreso
Bacardi De La Salsa that have strutted their stuff before the Pope, the Queen and other
big shots. The 300 or so lesser mortals -- a smattering of socialites, models and fashion
designers -- watching at the Oberoi tapped their feet to the Afro-Latino rhythms as they
sipped the brew. Something clicked. Performer Mike Rios cooed about wanting to "die
in India" and B-M India head Jayant Kapur about the drink being "hot and the
dance hotter". Heady stuff.
