Tag Along
I love your eyebrows today,"
chirps Natalia Helo, then turns to her audience in the green room to explain,
"Suneet's eyebrows look different every day." And why not? "Suneet" --
Suneet Tandon, theatre guy, TV man -- is acting in a play by Theatre Action Group (tag)
that is nothing if not different. Directed by Helo, daughter of the Colombian ambassador,
and Siddharth Anand Kumar of tag for the Delhi stage last week, New Lamps for Old
is an adaptation of Alladin in which the women are the movers and shakers of the
plot. Unlike the old story, the princess here (played by Helo) is not deceived into giving
the magic lamp to the caliph's wazir, she does it deliberately so that he might abduct
her, giving Alladin a shot at gallantry with the chance to rescue her. The play tends to
meander but it's a funny-serious blend that has its moments, like when the wazir (Tandon,
impressive as usual) is banished to "the highest mountain crest ... later known as
Everest". Now you know the story.
