Campus Crusade
It's popularity netas
would kill for. Children cheering at the sight of them, fans vying for a handshake. Except
that these are not fawning crowds at a political rally, but delighted
three-to-14-year-olds at a makeshift school in Bangalore's Rajendra Nagar slum, greeting
their teachers -- all students who are part of Christ College's Centre for Social Action
(CSA) project. Says csa's Kavitha Saralaya: "The love we get from the children is
tremendous."
Hundred volunteers have been working with about 70 kids, teaching them for two
hours daily; supervising weekend trips; even helping with family problems. CSA sponsors
the kids' uniforms, books and basic healthcare through funds raised on campus.
"Instead of spending in the canteen or at pubs," says Sandeep Babu, 19, "we
contribute here." Makes sense.
