The Music Review
A Day in the Life -- ERIC BENET: (Music
Today; Rs 95).
In the past few years, Benet has taken his R&B strength to
mix and match it with some jazz and pure pop -- a formula for mainstream success. This
album makes for easy listening because there's power in Benet's funk and a grab in his
voice. Georgy Porgy and When you think of me are tops.
A Little Bit of Mambo -- LOU BEGA: (Unicade/BMG
Crescendo; Rs 125 for a cassette; Rs 475 for a CD).
One of the bad things about music TV is that viewers can stay
satiated with a great video of a great track. With Lou Bega, whose music cuts as wickedly
as his smirk, it would be a mistake. Besides the title track, A Little Bit of Mambo has
stuff that takes a smirk and widens it into a hip-shaking grin. A smattering of Harlem
sound, hip-hop and surprisingly, salsa, goes into a mambo effort that's given him a
Billboard No. 1 hit. Mambo Mambo is supersonic. For anybody with a little sense of humour,
sass and an urge to cut loose. Happy. |
