SPECIAL SERIES

Muktesh Pant, 46
Vice-President, Global Brand Marketing, Reebok

The Wizard
Sometimes, in his passion for running, Muktesh Pant takes big leaps. In 1991 he moved from Hindustan Lever to Pepsi at a salary that earned him the epithet of a mega-buck manager. He took another leap in 1996 when he moved from Pepsi to Reebok as its country head in India. Then he set to work. In a market where global brands like Adidas, Nike, Lotto and Puma were jostling for consumer attention, Pant carved out more than 50 per cent share of India's premium footwear market for Reebok, throwing in massive brand identification and Americana for dessert. Those at Reebok's headquarters in Boston were pleased, because worldwide Nike outsells Reebok 2:1.
Pant knows how much. He moved earlier this year to Boston as Reebok's global brand manager. He's now among a handful of Indians who have earned their mega-spurs on home soil. Pant, whose style is described by a former boss as "hands on without interfering" is now a walking, talking, delivering global advertisement for a Made in India product.
