SPECIAL SERIES

Sanjay Bhatnagar, 38
CEO, Enron South Asia

The Case Study
Fifteen years ago, a young engineer jumped off a Schlumberger oil exploration rig in the South China Sea when it blew up. Though trapped in a capsized lifeboat, he righted it before help arrived. Staying cool in rough situations is by now Sanjay Bhatnagar's trademark. Recently promoted as CEO, Enron South Asia, he's more than the US megacorp's Dabhol man; he is working oil and gas explorations, power distribution, communication and is the key to Enron's growth in India. Bhatnagar has survived more governments and policy shifts than many businessmen and is overseeing the largest foreign investment in India at $4 billion (Rs 17,200 crore) and counting. What next? "I want to do a PhD in music," says "Case Study" Bhatnagar, as he is sometimes called. It's typical. When others think of fatigue, he thinks of a fugue.
