Calcutta's Cuppa
As if tea needed promotion in Bengal. But with the
lavish fair Cha Cha Cha, Dolly Roy of Dolly's Tea Shop, a classy 11-year-old tea store in
south Calcutta, wanted "to show tea in its infinite variety ... The cup you drink
every morning has a lot of associations that most people don't know about." So she
set up a typical English tea room, replicated a furnished estate manager's bungalow (which
served as a stall) and had a mini tea garden transported from Darjeeling. "It took us
40 books and journals just to get the specifics right," said Roy, who is the wife of
Congress MLA Saugata Roy. The displays were accompanied by various events including
quizzes and drawing contests. In one enclosure, strobe lights and thudding music invited
youngsters to shake a leg -- over tea -- but they were too busy trying out
"bold", "earthy" and "cheesy" at the tasters' competition.
More their cup of tea, huh?
