SPECIAL SERIES

Jaspinder Narula, 33
Pop Singer

Dr Diva
When Jaspinder Narula swept the music awards for the punchy title song in the film Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, she also rang in a new style of vocals for film songs. Two years down the line, there's a string of singers copying her, remarkable when many still think aping Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar is high art. "It feels great," says Narula. "Maybe I had something original to give."

Narula is one of the hottest selling voices, sought after by mainstream composers. She is just as comfortable with film music as she is with classical, jazz and folk. She divides her time between film music and Indipop. But Narula is not all about style. She has an MPhil in classical music from Delhi University. She is also busy completing her PhD in music on "Dhrupad and the impact of Urdu and other languages on classical music". Call her Dr Diva.
