Shankar Mahadevan, 33
Singer

Pop Art
Don't say "breathless". That's his line. Breathless, the song without a pause, became a chartbuster after 19 weeks on top of the Indipop charts recently, ousting favourites like Daler Mehndi. That's what Shankar Mahadevan can do these days, this classically trained singer who has taken his talent whole-hog pop, and pop is by far the better for it.

Shankar juggles with Carnatic music, Hindustani classical, jazz, fusion, the works, showcasing a new breed of performer who's comfortable in any style. "You have to keep on the top of everything," trumps Shankar, who started out in computer software before the other bug caught him. With jingle buddies Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, Shankar has now broken into the film circuit with a string of film scores and songs. Coming up after the soundtrack for Shool is Dillagi, Nayi Padosan and Mahesh Mathai's Bhopal Express. Like we said, no time to breathe.
