Mahesh Bhupathi, 25 & Leander Paes, 26
Tennis Players

THE 'A' TEAM
They have the money, they possess the art, they own the courage, they've acquired the confidence. So are they ready to make history? Two Grand Slam titles is impressive, a World No. 1 ranking for the doubles pair unique. It's also not enough. Greatness is a demanding mistress.

The two men, in their mid-20s, don't flinch. Says Mahesh Bhupathi: "We've got to keep winning Grand Slams and peak at the Olympics next year. We have the chance to be the best ever." This assuredness is not without reason, for as Leander Paes says, "We understand doubles as well as anyone else, the right shots to play, the angles to use."

Inspiration is essential, but coach Bob Carmichael rightfully emphasises the virtues of solidity. Their uniqueness also lies in their widely diverse gifts: Paes' speed, creativity, volley; Bhupathi's serve, return, consistency. If they complement each other, they learn from each other too. Says C.G.K. Bhupathi, Mahesh's father: "Lee's guts have rubbed off on Mahesh, Mahesh's calmness has rubbed off on Lee."

And so forget the titles, forget the past, it is right here, in their ability to refine their game, that their future will be decided. As they say in sports, yesterday doesn't count.
