Bangalore's green judge may have some folks seeing red, but the courts are standing by him. "When you are vested with powers, you must use them well," says Saldanha, 57, rated among the world's top 10 judges by the International Jurists' Association. Obviously his fraternity agrees. Last week a bench of the Karnataka High Court issued a notice under the Contempt of Court Act to Rajya Sabha member and former minister A. Lakshmisagar. His crime? Initiating a PIL seeking the quashing of every judicial order passed by Justice Saldanha.

The support is hard earned. In the past five years, following orders by Saldanha, the city's Outer Ring Road has been completed, fountains in Cubbon Park and Lalbagh have sprung back to life, and mounted policemen keep watch on the city's parks. The state Pollution Control Board has recorded that for the first time in three years air quality has improved. Says Saldanha, unfazed by occasional hiccups like the PIL: "If I can make Bangalore a better place to live in, I will do it even if I am being black balled." Your honour, the other cities are waiting.
