Jayamohan, 37
Author

THE NARRATOR

With his stylish spectacles and accessible, infectious  personality, he seems like a happy go lucky low-brow. Quite to the contrary Jayamohan is deeply philosophical and -- while of Malayalee parentage -- is recognised as Tamil's first post-modernist writer. Aptly for a man who wears so many identities, and calls literature a "spiritual cause", he drones away his day as a telephone operator in Kanyakumari district.

More than his first book Rubber, it was his second -- a novel called Vishnupuranam -- that put Jayamohan on the literary map. Vishnupuranam is a grand sweep of Tamil historical and philosophical tradition -- encompassing the times of the Rig Veda down to the Muslim invaders of a millennium later.

Though deeply rooted in his culture, Jayamohan's canvas is the world. His next novel, Pinthudarum Nizhalin Kural (The Voice of the Chasing Shadow), is set against the collapse of the Soviet Union and death of the great proletarian dream. Ever one for lost causes, his "first major project in the coming millennium is a 1,000-page novel on the vanished river Saraswati".
