Serial Thriller
Next time you're out shopping for
an elephant, check its eyes, tongue and toe nails. Check for wounds painted over on the
back. If you need more tips, check out India Diaries, a new National Geographic channel
series to be telecast in mid-2000. At least one of the six episodes of this "inside
look on lesser-known India" will be a handbook on the pachyderm. With Mark Shand at
the helm, it has to be. The Briton, who travelled all over India on elephant back 10 years
ago and then wrote a bestseller about it, was in Calcutta last week to unveil plans for
the serial. For the first episode, Shand and his team visited the Sonepur mela in Bihar,
the world's largest animal fair. It was an experience they won't forget -- a nervous calf
charged and knocked Shand over. The team spent a day in Calcutta scouting for locations.
From there, they move to the North-east where most of the series is set. Says Shand:
"India keeps luring me back, even after 30 years spent in travel here." Sounds
like there's more to come.
