Metro Scape

Back and forth

The dancers in satiny dhotis are engrossed in their classical dance motions. Suddenly they break into the staccato rhythms of a dance to the rap tones of Let's go to Mathura. The audience, after a split second of surprise, titters in amusement. Back to the classical style. Switch to en masse strumming of an imaginary guitar. Back and forth. Back and forth.

This is a scene from Pratibha Prahlad's Call of the Flute, performed at Sharad Vaibhava '99, the annual classical dance festival in Bangalore. This year, the organisers  picked the theme "A Tradition in Transition", intertwining the classical genre with contemporary elements best represented by Astad Deboo and Daksha Seth who were there.

"In terms of attention to detail and presentation, the festival is truly international," says Prahlad, managing trustee of Prasiddha Foundation, the organisers. That wasn't where the global touch ended. Snapshots from the Daksha Seth Dance Company had, among other elements, Kathak set to western classical music and a dance performed to music by a Finnish composer. And Bharatnatyam exponent Navtej Singh Johar worked his steps in part to a piece by a British composer. Good way to get the college crowd interested.
