Surf turf Want
the latest latest on Indian politics? Are you a cricket freak looking for
some pure stats? Try, not a newspaper, not an encyclopaedia, but the
just-launched Encyclopaedia Britannica (EB) online, India-specific and
free. "I'd be happy if it (britannica.co.in) is a combination of a
library and a college festival, meaning wholesome entertainment,"
says Aalok Wadhwa, MD of EB India. Apart from throwing open its own
database to the Net-surfing public, the site has a separate section on
India with tie-ups with India Today Group Online and The Hindu for that
current-affairs advantage over the print set, and doubles up as a search
engine for the best sites on the Net rated by Britannica's editors.
There's more coming up for the desi audience including a Britannica on
south Asia. Why India? Well, among other things, says Wadhwa, "our
brand value here is among the highest in the world. Research shows people
here compare us to Rolls-Royce, to gold." Can anyone ignore such
flattery? -Anna M.M.Vetticad
