Magic moments

This Sorcar works his own magic. When Calcuttans heard that legendary magician P.C. Sorcar's son Manick, 54, was putting up a show -- his first in the city -- last week, many expected the typical tricks. What they got instead was a laser display packing 310 years of the city's history into eight minutes and some short, award-winning animation films by the family's very own computer wizard. Why animation? Well, instead of reading to his daughters like a regular father, this Sorcar would draw for them. And when they started growing up "too Americanised" in their Denver home, he drew them to Indian culture by making animation flicks from old Bengali folk tales, Panchatantra and other home-grown fare -- witty, and technically pathbreaking in combining live action and drawings. Now he's thinking of starting an animation centre in Calcutta. Payback time.
